Cat Ideal Weight: How to Estimate It and Track the Trend in FurNote
FurNote is a record-keeping tool, not veterinary advice. Most domestic cats sit around 3.5-5.5 kg (about 8-12 lb), while large breeds like Maine Coons or Ragdolls can be 5-9 kg. But 'ideal weight' is really about body condition score (BCS 1-9); the target is 4-5/9, where you can feel the ribs and see a waist from above. Weighing once a week and following the trend in FurNote helps you catch small 0.1 kg shifts early.

Ideal weight estimate
Pick a body type for a reference range. The final call is your vet's, via a BCS score.
Medium breeds · e.g. Domestic Shorthair, British Shorthair, Scottish Fold

Target midpoint around 4.5 kg (BCS 4–5/9)
BCS body condition reference
| 1–3 | Underweight — ribs clearly visible, no fat |
| 4–5Ideal | Ribs easily felt, visible waist |
| 6–7 | Overweight — waist gone, ribs hard to feel |
| 8–9 | Obese — belly sags, needs intervention |
How To
Track it with FurNote, step by step
STEP 01
Weigh at a consistent time
Pick one day and time each week, ideally before a meal, to reduce swings from food and water. A home scale plus a carrier is enough: weigh yourself holding the empty carrier, then holding the carrier with your cat inside, and subtract the difference.
STEP 02
Add a weight record in FurNote
Open Records to Weight, tap the plus button, and enter the weight and date. FurNote automatically plots the weight trend chart for you.
STEP 03
Read the trend chart and dashboard alert
The Weight tab shows the trend line and the most recent reading. FurNote's dashboard compares the latest weight with 30 days ago and surfaces a prompt card when it drops more than 5% or rises more than 10%, so you know when to take a closer look.
STEP 04
Invite family to track together (Pro)
On the pet's detail page you can invite family or housemates (a Pro feature); they can add weight records and see the same trend chart. For a recurring weekly weigh-in reminder, set a repeating alert in your phone's Reminders app, since FurNote's built-in scheduled notifications are for medication (daily or every other day), not weekly weigh-ins.
STEP 05
Export a PDF before the vet
From the Export page, select the Weight module and a date range to generate a PDF. Showing your vet a continuous trend is far more precise than saying 'she looks a bit thinner lately.'
FAQ
Frequently asked
- At what age should I start tracking a cat's weight?
- Around 1 year, once the skeleton has matured, weigh weekly. In kittenhood, weekly gains are normal, so focus on whether the growth curve looks reasonable rather than on any single number.
- How much is overweight?
- Roughly 10-20% over ideal weight is overweight, and over 20% is obese, but BCS is more reliable. If you can't feel the ribs, the waist has disappeared, and the belly sags, it's 6/9 or higher and worth acting on.
- Are large breeds like Maine Coons or Ragdolls different?
- Yes. A mature male of a large breed can reach 6-9 kg, so judge by BCS rather than the absolute number. The same 7 kg can be healthy on a muscular Maine Coon and overweight on a round-bellied domestic shorthair.
- My cat's weight swings 0.1-0.2 kg each week. Is that normal?
- Yes. Water, food, and litter-box timing all move the short-term number. A 4-week moving view, which FurNote's trend chart shows, is more reliable than any single reading.
- Should I worry if my senior cat is losing weight?
- For cats 7 and older, a loss of more than 5% sustained over about four weeks is worth a vet visit; common causes include hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or dental pain that affects eating. Export a 6-month trend from FurNote so your vet can see it clearly.
